Top 10 Major Accomplishments of Hillary Clinton Before Running for President

Hillary Clinton has a decades-long career in public service, facing many challenges and tough decisions. But her biggest challenge is right in front of her if she manages to win this year’s elections and become America’s first female president.

Clinton has been a first lady, US senator from New York, and secretary of state before accepting the Democratic party’s nomination for President. But before enrolling in politics, Clinton was a distinguished graduate of Yale Law School, former Director of the Arkansas Legal Aid Clinic, civil litigation attorney, Law Professor at the University of Arkansas School of Law, and First Lady of Arkansas. She is also a GRAMMY Award Winner and an author. Yes, after graduating, she could have chosen to work for a prestigious law firm, but she chose a job at the Children’s Defense Fund instead. She worked with teenagers and families with disabled children, which sparked her passion for helping children.

Her critics will say that Hillary Clinton hasn’t achieved much, but her accomplishments in various fields are obvious. We have picked her top 10 major things she accomplished before running for president, and we hope those will be just the beginning if she wins the elections…

1.Helping Children and Families

Hillary Clinton has been fighting for children and families for over 40 years, which is probably her biggest accomplishment. She worked with Republicans and Democrats to create the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Today CHIP provides health care to more than 8 million kids. Clinton was also instrumental in creating the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the Foster Care Independence Act.

2.Fighting for Women’s Rights

“Women’s rights are human rights,” said Hillary Clinton to the world at a U.N. conference. She was determined to talk about human rights abuses, although many wanted her to pick a different topic. She has advanced women’s rights in countries around the globe which makes her an inspiration for billions of women. While leading the State Department, she used her visits to all 112 countries to empower women making gender equality a priority of U.S. foreign policy.

3.Health Care for 9/11 First Responders

Clinton has had many accomplishments as Senator of New York and as Secretary of State, but one of the most distinguished things she did was fighting to protect the 9/11 first responders making sure that those who got sick get the care and treatment they deserved. She has also played an important role in securing $21 billion in federal aid to help New York rebuild after 9/11.

4.Role in killing Osama bin Laden

Clinton was one of the few people present in the Situation Room when decisions were being made about the raid for killing Osama bin Laden. She aggressively pushed for the mission, although others were opposed. As a Secretary of State, she took the risk and proved to be right. “I was one of those who recommended the president launch what a very risky raid was… because if all we had done were launch a missile and dropped a bomb, we never would have known [if bin Laden was dead],” Clinton said during a speech at Iowa State University where she explained in details her role in killing Bin Laden.

5. Management of the State Department

Hillary Clinton was the 67th United States Secretary of State, taking Condoleezza Rice’s place for 4 years (2009-2013). In that time, we saw a 50 percent increase in exports to China, a lot of work on climate changes, and the effort to create and implement the toughest sanctions ever on Iran. She definitely left the American foreign policy stronger when she left than it was when she arrived.

6. Elected twice as a senator from New York

As a senator, Clinton made New York love her. She was elected twice as senator of the state, the first time in 2000, then in 2006, becoming the first lady to win elective office. During her time as a senator, she focused largely on issues specific to the state. After the 9/11 attacks, she advocated for aid to NYC and supported military operations in Afghanistan. She also won attention for working with Republicans on many issues. On January 21, 2009, Clinton resigned from the Senate to become United States Secretary of State for the Obama Administration.

7. Stood for LGBT rights

Just as she stood for women’s rights, Clinton stood for LGBT rights both home and abroad, stating that “gay rights are human rights.” While being a Secretary of State, she definitely made the State Department a better place for LGBT employees to work and made LGBT rights a focus of U.S. foreign policy.

8. Health Care and Family Leave for Military Families

Hillary Clinton will be definitely remembered for her work on providing better health care and family leave for military families. Thanks to her efforts, members of the National Guard and reservists will have access to health care when they return home, and with the expanded Family Medical Leave Act, members of the family of those wounded while in service can take a leave to help their loved ones.

9. Role in Ceasefire between Israel and Hamas

When Hamas attacked Israel, Clinton was the first to visit the region as the nation’s chief diplomat immediately. She managed to negotiate a ceasefire in only twenty-four hours. Thanks to this, that year became Israel’s quietest in a decade.

Bush administration left America’s reputation severely damaged, so rebuilding it was one of Hillary Clinton’s toughest challenges when she arrived at the State Department. And she managed to accomplish so much when foreign policy is in question – from preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon to normalizing Cuba’s relations. She was the key in rebuilding America’s leadership and prestige overseas, restoring alliances with Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
